If
you do choose to fold your newsletter, pay attention to
how you do so and where your mailing label is placed. Typically,
newsletters are creased lengthwise, then folded over width-wise
for a smaller mail piece. When folded this way, one side
of the mail piece is "closed" (where the fold is) and one
side is open. The open side must be tabbed, or closed with
a sticker, in order to be "automation compatible," or use
postal equipment that allows the lowest possible mailing
rate.
Because
of the machinery used when the postal service scans the
mail piece, if your mailing address is placed so that the
open edge of the piece is at the bottom, you will need
to place two tabs on the open edge, which makes the newsletter
harder to access and thus decreases its readability and
increases the risk of damaging the newsletter in the process
of opening it. If you simply flip your address around,
so that the closed edge of the piece is at the bottom,
only one tab will be required to close the folded mail
piece, increasing the readability of your newsletter.
